Victoria, BC - September 24th, 2008 - VIATeC (formerly known as the Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre) has now received approval from its members to change the association's name to the Victoria Advanced Technology Council. Although the name may have changed, the acronym (VIATeC) will remain the same.
The reason for the name change is in line with VIATeC's mandate, which is focused directly on growing the technology sector in Greater Victoria as opposed to the entire Vancouver Island region. MISTIC (the Mid-Island Science, Technology and Innovation Council) takes charge in promoting technology in the northern part of Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo.
The name modification announcement was made on September 18th, at the Annual General Meeting where VIATeC members elected their Board of Directors for 2008-09. The election resulted in 5 new members to the VIATeC Board including:
* Art Aylesworth from Armada Pacific (also selected as Chairman of the Board)
* Maria Race from Udutu
* David Sovka from Camosun College
* Craig Thomson from Beanstream
* Michael Shannon from Michael Shannon and Associates
Returning members to the VIATeC Board of Directors include:
* Dale Gann from Vancouver Island Technology Park
* Rob Bennett from Simation
* Harry Weiler from AXYS Technologies
* Gary Eisenstein from Falcon Software
* Don Safnuk from Corporate Recruiters
* Dale Campbell from Atomic Crayon
* Scott Petersen from OA Solutions
* Scott Phillips from StarFish Medical
* Mark Grambart from Contech Electronics
Dan Gunn, VIATeC's Executive Director, believes the election has created a strong, well-rounded group of strategic thinkers, which is exciting news for stakeholders focused on the growth of the local technology industry. "When looking at the diverse experience and backgrounds of each elected member, I'm excited to see where our assocation can grow over the upcoming year."
During the meeting, Gunn reported to members that VIATeC was now in the best financial shape in its 19 year history, with over $700,000 in annual revenues.
